Lead Lined Sheetrock
Radiation Protection Products (RPP) uses only Fire Code Sheetrock products. Our lead lined sheetrock, also known as lead lined drywall or lead lined gypsum, is supplied with lead lining bonded to 1/2” or 5/8” drywall. Lead lined drywall is supply with 2” strips of the same lead thickness and height, and 3/8” diameter lead discs. Custom sizes of lead lined drywall are available upon request. Installation Information for Lead Backed Drywall
Our lead lined drywall consists of a single, unpierced sheet of lead laminated to the specified thickness of drywall. The bonding is accomplished with a continuous layer of mastic adhesive.
Lead lined sheetrock should be fastened at a minimum of 8” on center at the edges of each sheet, and at a minimum of 12” on center at the intermediate studs with normal drywall screws.
2” wide stripes of sheet lead of the same thickness should be applied to each of the joint studs using a standard type of construction adhesive, prior to installing the lead lined drywall. These sheet lead strips will provide the necessary 1” overlap with the adjoining sheets.
To eliminate the possibility of radiation leakage at the point of fastening, each fastener should be covered with a 3/8” lead disc of equal thickness to the lead laminated to the sheetrock. Lead discs should be applied using a fast-drying construction adhesive. Note: According to the National Council on Radiation Protection & Measurements, these lead discs are not required for effective radiation shielding in applications using 1/8” lead shielding or below, as the steel fasteners will attenuate the gamma rays as well as or better than lead.
Lead Angles for Easy Installation
Save time and money on installation of your lead lined sheetrock with RPP’s leak-proof lead angle system. Our lead angles provide complete coverage of gamma rays and eliminate the need for lead strips and discs for lead lined drywall and lead lined plywood applications.
We offer leak-proof lead angles in all lead requirements and all heights. These innovative lead angles are available only from Radiation Protection Products.
Radiation Shielding for Cut Outs & Penetrations
When installing lead lined drywall, all cut outs and penetrations require sheet lead to ensure continuous shielding throughout the room. Additional sheet lead can be supplied to allow for the proper shielding of penetrations such as receptacles, light switches, ducts, and telephone/data cables.
RPP uses only the purest lead available for our sheet lead. Absolutely no refining takes place at our facility, making us one of the cleanest and most environmentally-friendly radiation shielding providers in the industry.
